Gamabian Semi Islamist Leader Yahya Jammeh Hails His Nation’s Army
3 August 2009
The Gambian leader, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, has expressed satisfaction and pride for the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF). The country's armed forces, he said, "has made Gambians proud both in and out of the country." According to the GAF's Commander-in-chief, Gambian soldiers have demonstrated true patriotism and professionalism both in and outside the country, especially in countries where they are serving on peace keeping missions. Professor Jammeh made this statement last Friday, while decorating 75 newly promoted officers of The Gambia Armed Forces at his home town of Kanilai. As far as his government is concerned, President Jammeh informed the gathering, promotion would be based on performance. The Gambian leader added that the same procedure would be applied in the rest of government institutions. "For the Armed Forces, patriotic individuals would be first considered," he stated, and added, No body is more dangerous than an unpatriotic military officer with a high position in the army." And the president continued, "For those who are promoted, those who are to be promoted and those who are not promoted, you should all work hard. If you work hard, the sky is the limit." Urging the newly promoted officers to work hard and vindicate his decision of promoting them by proving that they deserve to be promoted, the Commander-in-chief of The Gambia Armed Forces stated: "don't be surprised for somebody to join the army and come and pass by you and tell you 'Alsaamadeh'". President Jammeh outlined the safeguard of the country's sovereignty and independence, maintenance of peace and stability as well as to guarantee sustainable development, as the main duties of the armed forces. He finally congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to continue the hard work. Speaking earlier, newly promoted Lieutenant General Langtombong Tamba, chief of defence staff of The Gambia Armed Forces, described the promotions as the highest in the history of The Gambia Armed Forces. He thanked President Jammeh and his government for the trust and confidence bestowed in him and his officers. "Barely one year now, since after the last promotion was made, God has gathered us once again for a similar event much greater than the last gathering in terms of number and capacity. It is for the first time we got the promotion at a row of more than seven brigadier generals, six colonels, over thirty Lt colonels and over twenty majors," CDS Tamba remarked. He expressed hope that his men would give him the necessary support and work as a team. JFP presents over D2M cheque. In another development, last Friday in Kanilai, Ardy Sarge, chairman of the Jammeh Foundation for Peace (JFP) Fundraising Committee, presented a cheque for over two million dalasis (D2M), being proceeds of fundraising gala dinner, organised on May 25, 2009, which celebration coincided with President Jammeh's birthday. Sarge reminded the gathering that the fundraising was organised in support of President Jammeh's treatment programme. He thanked their sponsors, among them Africell and GRTS. Fatou Jeng, a renowned Senegalese musician, also presented gifts to President Jammeh in Kanila, over the weekend.
