AU Committee for Solving Problems of Darfur Meet Rebel Factions in Tripoli
9 August 2009
The High Level African Union Committee for resolving the problem in Darfur region in Sudan, held its meeting Tuesday in Tripoli with number of political and armed factions in the region. The meeting included from the Committee former South African President Thabo Mbeki and the former Burundian President Pierre Buyoya. On the part of the political and armed factions in the region, those who participated in the meeting include: Revolutionary Force Front, the United Resistant Front, the Justice and Equality Sudanese Movement "Arzaq Wing" and five factions of the Sudanese Liberation Movement. The AU committee listened to the positions of all factions as to the early submitted work paper to them. They stated their views regarding the questions advanced by the committee about achieving peace, reconciliation and the political future of Darfur. The Committee clarified that these answers will be within its report which will be presented to the African Union. Meanwhile, the situation in Darfur region is stabilizing with UN-African Union peacekeepers able to provide improved security but still in need of crucial air mobility, the outgoing commander, General Martin Luther Agwai of Nigeria, said here Thursday. "We have been able to stabilize the situation in Darfur. But there are still a lot of challenges," said General Agwai. He told a press conference that more and more Darfurians were venturing out of internally displaced persons (IDPs) camps to cultivate their lands in their villages and some were even voluntarily returning to their homes. "That means there's more security," he noted, while conceding that UNAMID's current strength did not allow it to provide security to all the IDPs camps.
