Nigeria’s Shariah State Zamfara Sells Food Items At Reduced Rates
10 August 2009
Gusau — Worried by the high cost of food items, Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Shinkafi, has ordered the sale of assorted grains to civil servants and general public at subsidised rate. Already, the state government has sold 50,000 assorted bags of the grains to the Federal Government as part of efforts to complement the Federal Government's food security programme in the country. Fielding questions from reporters in Gusau, Special Adviser to the Governor on Commodity Marketing and Distribution, Alhaji Haruna Dansadau, said the governor's approval was aimed at assisting civil servants, the poor, and the less privilege members of the society to beat the present difficulties. "The plan is to assist every body in the state. You know very well that the economic meltdown has touched every body and the government felt that it is time to come in and assist every one to alleviate the suffering." According to him, the state government has enough grains in reserve to serve the people of the state contrary to claims in some quarters that state government has sold all the grains. "We only sold five metric tones to Federal Government, which was 50,000 bags. There is still grains in our stores that would serve our needs in the state". He maintained that workers are to pay for the grains through their monthly salary's deduction of amount to be announced by the government soon. Dansadau explained that the country has enough potential to feed itself, saying the country has no reason to import food from outside. "We have the land so I see no reason why we should import foods," he added. He maintained that whoever wants to know whether there was grains or not in the stores should come and verify, "we have more than enough, anybody can verify". Dansadau further revealed that in order to assist civil servants in the state, government has planned to purchase parboiled rice for distribution at subsidised rates, which would be deducted from their salaries monthly. He stressed that the state government would continue to come out with more ways that will ensure prices of grains reduce to the minimum bearing for the common man.
