Making Haj Comfortable, Saudi Government Claims Safety Check Success
2 August 2009
MAKKAH: As part of its efforts to increase safety and comfort of Haj pilgrims, the Ministry of Haj has decided to assign doctors and clinics to Tawafa establishments (the organizations that take care of Haj pilgrims) during the upcoming Haj season, which falls this year in the last week of November. The Ministry of Haj is also keen on protecting pilgrims from the H1N1 pandemic. “The Ministry of Haj is in constant touch with the Ministry of Health to obtain all instructions and precautionary measures against the flu so that the Haj missions in various countries can instruct their pilgrims on the precautions,” Haj Minister Fouad Al-Farsy said in a statement after his visit to the Tawafa organizations in Makkah on Sunday. “The Haj Ministry affirms to all Haj delegations and other tour organizers to follow the recommendations of the recent meeting of health ministers (referring to the recent emergency meeting of health ministers in Cairo on the preventive measures to be taken by pilgrims),” Al-Farsy said. The minister added that his ministry has made vast preparations to serve pilgrims so that they would be able to perform their rites with total comfort during this Haj season. “That is in line with the directives of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah, Crown Prince Sultan, deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation, and Second Deputy Premier and Interior Minister Prince Naif,” the minister said. The minister added that he had met with 80 Haj delegations in order to discuss matters such as pilgrims’ accommodation, transportation and awareness campaigns on Haj rites. “The fact that this year’s number of Umrah (lesser pilgrimage) pilgrims is 300,000 higher than their number last year affirms the fact that the Kingdom’s service to them is moving on the right track with all government departments and private agencies trying their best to make the pilgrims’ stay and worshipping safe and comfortable,” he added. He also noted the number of overstayers after the pilgrimage fell to 0.25 percent during the current year, according to the figures available at the Passport Department. The ministry has made the Tawafa establishments to function under an organization to coordinate them. The minister also said that the government converted the Tawafa organizations from their temporary status to permanent bodies. He also stressed the social importance and historical role of the organizations. The minister also commended the role of Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal who is the head of the Central Haj Committee in making the Haj services most effective and successful.
