11 August 2009
Bossaso — Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told the media on Monday that the Italian tugboat named Buccaneer with ten Italian nationals, five Romanians and one Croatian crewman on board was released and all the crew members are safe. The boat was reportedly heading towards the neighboring Republic of Djibouti with naval escort. Italy's foreign minister said the Somali transitional federal government, the northern Somalia regional government of Puntland and Italian intelligence took part in efforts for the safe release of the tugboat and its crew. Mr. Frattini denied that ransom money was paid for the pirates to release the tugboat, but inside sources tell Garowe Online that some ransom money was paid. One pirate, who identified himself only as Aden, confidentially said that the pirate gang which seized the tugboat in April received "$4million cash" to release the boat. His claim could not be independently verified, but Somali pirates have collected tens of millions of dollars in ransom payments since 2007.
