8 September 2009
The African Union and United Nations Mission in Darfur (AUUNMID) said on Thursday that the security situation in Darfur remains relatively calm. According to a press release made by the organization's communication and public information division on Thursday, UNAMID Military conducted a total of 156 patrols in and around villages and internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. UNAMID police officers conducted a total of 168 patrols in and around the villages and IDP camps. Joint Special Representative (JSR) Rodolphe Adada today reiterated that the security situation in Darfur had improved. He made the observation during a military parade in his honour at UNAMID's El Fasher headquarters. Addressing peacekeeping troops, he said, "Thanks to your increasing presence on the ground, we are observing an improvement of the security situation in every part of Darfur in which you are deployed." Furthermore, Mr. Adada stated that as the peace process continued, "the military components will be called on to play a key role in monitoring any future peace agreement". The outgoing JSR also thanked the troops for their dedication and bravery in the fulfillment of their tasks. "Being always on the front lines, you have shown the entire world your readiness to defend the principles of peace," he noted. JSR Adada has led UNAMID since its inception and was in charge of the transition of authority to the Mission from the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS) at the end of 2007.
