Ramadan Means Fierce Competition Among Turkish Newspapers
2 September 2009
With the advent of the holy month of Ramadan, Turkish dailies have engaged in a fierce competition to attract more readers through various promotions. According to a recent study by the Media Monitoring Center (MTM), newspapers offer cook books, religious CDs, Qurans and Turkish translations of the Quran. The newspapers that offered the most promotions between July 1 and Aug. 15 were Aksam and Habertürk. Theology professors believe newspaper promotions during the holy month serve as a perfect opportunity to increase believers' knowledge about Islam. “The distribution of the Quran and its translation to believers is an important medium to reach out to many people during the holy month. Newspapers distribute a wide variety of promotions during this month. I believe they strengthen ties among the nation,” stated Professor Yakup Çiçek from Marmara University's faculty of theology. Professor Mustafa Usta from the same faculty warned that newspapers should not see the holy month as an opportunity to increase their profits. “The distribution of promotions is not forbidden in religion, but newspapers should be careful concerning this point. They should refrain from seeing Ramadan as a time to increase their profits,” he said.
