The Demise Of The Emir Of Daura And Lessons Of Death

Posted By Babandi Gumel

As decreed by Allah (S.W.T) every soul will taste death and we will all be given our rewards on the Day of Judgement therefore he who is removed from the fire of Hell and is made to enter Paradise then he indeed is triumphant

The life of this world is but comfort of illusion. I came in the office on Monday Morning as usual browsing through my computer when I noticed a picture of a funeral in Daily Trust then realised that it was the funeral of the Emir of Daura Alhaji Muhammad Bashar who died on Sunday Morning the 25th February.

According to the reports he was hale and hearty I remember the last time he was here in London on admittance in Hospital we went with some friends to visit him at his residence when he was recuperating almost every one thought that was his end but Alhamdu Lillahi he recovered fully and went back to Nigeria and continued with his usual routine. Then suddenly almost every one was taken by surprise about the news of the demise of the late Emir who was billed to attend to some functions on Monday Morning the function which he could not as death approached him he was 82 Rahimallahu Alaihi.

Every one knows or rather is aware of the day he was born but no body knows the time of his/her death. The demise of the Late Emir reminded us of the sudden demise of the Sultan of Sokoto in October last year in a Plane crash and few weeks before that about ten top Military Officers died yet again in another sudden plane crash on the way to attend a retreat.

All these sudden death came almost a year before the sudden and shocking death of the wife of the President the First Lady Stella Obasanjo who was also said to be hale and hearty. She died suddenly and unexpectedly during a routine speculative operation. Rivalry in worldly increase distracts you until you arrive in the Grave said Allah in His Holy Book.

This kind of sudden death of some prominent people reminds us of what Allah says in the Quran “O you who believe! Let neither your wealth nor your children distract you from the remembrance of Allah. Those who do so they are the losers as every one knows the real loss is in the Life Hereafter where you have no body except your good or evil deeds.

Unfortunately we are all so engrossed in acquiring the material wealth and at the time of death one will not go to his grave with anything except his deeds good or evil depending on your choice. The Prophet said when the Son of Adam dies all his deeds will come to an end except in three cases, the knowledge which he left and people utilising, a pious child which the deceased left and is supplicating for him and the recurring charity called Sadaqah Jariyah like building Mosque, or any philanthropist activity such as digging well or bore hole the rest of materials we acquired will not be of any benefit to us after death.

This is why the Prophet has reminded us in famous Hadith that a wise person is he who controls his Nafs desires and makes preparation for the life after death and a foolish person is the one who follows his desires and then hopes for the Mercy of Allah.

This is a lesson for all of us we must prepare and make practical effort in this direction to prepare for our death which is unknown to all of us. No body knows when he or she is going to leave this temporary World for our permanent abode in the Hereafter.

This reminds me of our politicians who are struggling by all means to acquire the mantle of leadership daily forgetting the actual and real purpose of our lives.

Sometimes unfortunately their actions infer that the purpose of this life is to acquire leadership by hook or crook whether good or bad. To them becoming a leader is the ultimate success.

Just think how many have become leaders yet at the time of death they don’t go to the Hereafter as leaders but ordinary people like every one. Unfortunately due to material engrossment we forget the death is coming to us as we live in our fool’s paradise so much engaged in politics as politicians or busy with our business which make us busy forgetting completely the purpose why we are here. We should remember when the Angel of death comes he is not going write a letter to us or telephone us nor is he going to text us on our mobile phones saying “brother get ready I am coming so and so time “or E Mail us on our PCs to enable us prepare for His arrival.

Therefore while we are engaged with our worldly activities we should not forget the purpose to which Allah has sent us to this short life sixty, seventy or eighty sometimes up ninety if you are lucky you celebrate your century, but the most a person can live in this world one may not exceed more than 150 years. The life in the Hereafter in Paradise is for ever is not a matter of living for 500 years or 10,000 years or million years but is more than billion years is trillion times trillion and continue counting up the day of Judgement even after that Day so will never finish as it will be forever. So if you compare the enjoyment of this our short temporary life with the life of the Hereafter we will realise that it is only illusion.

As Rasulullah has compared this life and the hereafter like some one dipping a needle in an ocean and bring it out. How much water is left this compares the two therefore we should never be deceived with what we acquired in this World as is so meagre and negligible. At the time of death we will part with everything. We will not take a single penny with us to our graves and therefore the reality is that success in the Hereafter has got nothing to do with what you acquired or your status in this World but what we have sent for our future in the Hereafter.

Therefore as Allah has clearly mentioned in His Holy Book success is not acquiring or amassing wealth and sometimes we are blinded so much with our materials that often unfortunately acquiring illegal wealth believing that it would give us success which is like a sheer dream or unfortunate illusion. One thing which we should remember all the wealth that we have acquired if it is lawful wealth called Halal then we have to give account as to how we acquired it but if unfortunately the wealth acquired is Haram unlawful then we should be prepared to face the consequence of our illegal dealing acquiring such unlawful wealth which could become the means of our destruction unless Allah has Mercy on us in the Hereafter.

Apparently to amass wealth is so nice but the consequence of that will only dawn on us after death when we close our eyes. This is why it is said in Hadith human being is so greedy and he will continue to do so if you give him valley of gold he would like to have the second one and would continue doing so. He would not be satisfied with whatever one acquires, the only thing that would make him give up is when he is laid in the grave i.e put dust in his mouth after death he would not wish for anything of this world.

If we are unfortunately deprived of our material possessions sometimes we lament but it is in our own interest for the benefit of our Hereafter which we should all aim at. So it is good and is in the interest of all public servants especially the politicians to see the EFCC Anti-Graft Commission chasing public officers who have acquired such illegal wealth giving it back to the rightful owners the government coppers as it does not belong to them but is Amanah Trust. Therefore it is in there own interest as public servants who were entrusted with a trust but neglected to discharge the responsibility. So indirectly it is good to be separated with such unlawful wealth otherwise it will be a means of regret as they will be dumbfounded when confronted in the Hereafter to give account of every penny they acquired illegally.

This kind of unfortunate rivalry and engrossment has distracted them from the remembrance of Allah which would make them losers in the Hereafter. Every day we see people dying but we never take lesson which reminds us that we will also face the same fate tomorrow as we must give account before the King of the Kings Allah (S.W.T) who is never unmindful of whatever we do.

As long we are alive we have the chance to make amends and prepare for the Hereafter but every day we tend to forget although we see our relatives acquaintances leaving this temporary abode and gone to the permanent abode and would never come back. So death is a reminder to all of us that one day we will face the same consequence.

The question is are we prepared to welcome the Angel of death when ever He arrives or not? If we are not yet ready we should start making such preparation before He comes any time. No body can stop him from coming to visit us so therefore you are warned don’t let your wealth or children distract you from the remembrance of Allah doing so would make us unsuccessful and losers in the Hereafter which would be very unfortunate.

It was said of Umar Bin Abdul Azeez Rahimallahu Alaihi he used to gather the Ulama after Salatul Isha to remind him of death and the hereafter so as not forget the purpose of this transitory life. So the remembrance of death would make us become alert and more responsible helping us to discharge our duties honourably and prepare to meet our Creator.

Therefore in our own interest we must make effort to readjust our routine as we are all busy and engrossed with our business which made us busy and forgetful. We pray Allah give all of us Hidayah and Tawfiq to heed to the nasihah which is in our own interest and against our vain desires which distract us from the remembrance of Allah.

WA Akhiri Daawana Anil Hamdu Lillahi Rabbil Alameen
