It is hard to imagine, during the slavery era in America, in the shade of the most violent and cruel slave trade in the history of the world, there were some slaves who refused to revolt. Understandably, some refused because of fear. Others, on the other hand, had become so content under the whip of the slave master that they desired no other position. Harriet Tubman, famous for her underground railroad that guided many slaves to freedom, said, “I freed 300 slaves, I could have freed 10,000 only if they knew they were slaves.” Because of total submissiveness to the slave master’s command, some of the slaves worked in the house and received better treatment than the more defiant slaves that worked in the field. The meek and eager... Full Story...
American Secretary of War Robert Gates knows a real leader when he sees one. “Clearly, as far as I’m concerned,” he said, Vladimir Putin, and not President Dmitry Medvedev, "has the upper hand right now." Well hell, Gates should know. After all, he deals on a daily basis with the same peculiar situation here in the US, where the president also is a figurehead and the real power lies in the hands of Vice President Dick Cheney. But Gates doesn’t speak with such clarity and directness in other matters. "I think that there is a real concern that Russia has turned the corner here and is headed back toward its past rather than toward its future, and my hope is that we will see actions in the weeks and months to come that provide us some reassurance," he... I am not sure what is the opposite of "don't give up the day job" -- "don't give up the night job?" -- but whatever it is, Maggie Sotyu should take it to heart. Sotyu is an ANC MP and the chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio committee on safety and security. She has now had her Andy Warhol-like 15 minutes of fame: three weeks ago she was foolish enough to allow her frustration and anger with the Democratic Alliance to unravel her sense of judgement. In a press conference, she proclaimed that the Directorate of Special Operations (DSO -- aka the Scorpions) would be dissolved because the ANC had taken a decision to do so, irrespective of the public hearings that commenced last week. Yunus Carrim, a veteran committee chairperson, who now... Full Story...
Sometimes when it was reliably learnt that the no-nonsense former EFCC Chairman Nuhu Ribadu the Anti Corruption Czar was to be sent on course there was an outcry and public condemnation among Nigerians in and abroad. While many Nigerians were not in favour of the move few of the elites accused of corruption naturally welcomed the move as it gave them a sort of relief saving them from further unnecessary investigations and so a good riddance. The workaholic Malam Ribadu became so popular for his role and stance against the corruption and the corrupt practices during Obasanjo’s Administration. Even though the Regime was not so popular yet Ribadu made his headway becoming so popular among the masses for his anti corruption’s... Full Story...
When Nigerian teachers embarked on an endless strike to protest poor remuneration and deplorable learning environment, I had expected Nigerian women to join in the strike in solidarity for their children who are, not only victims of the long strike, but also victims of the decay in our educational system. Somehow, the women did not see any reason why they should join in a strike which in their thinking, does not concern them. So many other strikes have been embarked upon by different segments of our society in recent times. Somehow too, the women have never seen any reason why they should join in a strike. But I presume all that has changed. The women cannot tell me that they cannot see any reason why they should embark on a strike... Full Story...
I am pleased to announce that a new species of bird, the African pheasant, was recently discovered by French wildlife enthusiast Nicolas Sarkozee. After years of carefully observing pheasants from all over the world, he visited West Africa and spent time in the jungle, noting carefully the features of this curious bird. Last month in Dakar he delivered a paper on his findings, discussing the remarkable consistency of characteristics possessed by the African pheasant that make it unique among game birds worldwide. Sarkozee spoke about the pheasant's "endless repetition of the same gestures". The eminent scholar, known for his careful research, observed the pheasants pecking on empty ground for several generations and concluded that they lived in an "imaginary world where everything starts over and over again".... Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, on his first trip abroad since the International Criminal Court moved to indict him for war crimes, on Tuesday denied that his forces had committed genocide in Darfur. Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo in July asked the court to issue an arrest warrant for Bashir on charges of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur, saying his state apparatus had killed 35 000 people and indirectly at least another 100 000. Bashir, who has defied the ICC and calls the court's move part of a neo-colonialist agenda... Full Story...
By Uri Avnery -- One of the wisest pronouncements I have heard in my life was that of an Egyptian general, a few days after Anwar Sadat's historic visit to Jerusalem. We were the first Israelis to come to Cairo, and one of the things we were very curious about was: how did you manage to surprise us at the beginning of the October 1973 war? The general answered: "Instead of reading the intelligence reports, you should have read our poets." I reflected on these words last Wednesday, at the funeral of Mahmoud Darwish. DURING THE funeral ceremony in Ramallah he was... Full Story...
