Making The Right Choice: British elections And Nigerian Politics

In politics one does not rush he or she has to sit and consult colleagues so as to come with the right decision instead than deciding hastily which could bring the wrong result. As seen from the last general election here in Britain the people have collectively spoken their minds choosing what they call the hang parliament that was not produced since 1974. Though the Conservatives secured more Votes or MPs more than the other two main parties Labour and the Liberal yet it could not form the Government as they want so they have to go on consultation so as to come with the right choice possible.

Initially the Conservatives who won 306 seats almost 20 short of the outright majority required by the Constitution had to go in some sort of alliance with the Liberals who came third with 58 MPS that could easily help the Conservatives form the Government but unfortunately as some commentators have seen the two parties are not traditional allies so that is why it was very difficult to form a coalition Government between the Conservatives and the Liberals.

Naturally the traditional allies of the Liberals are the Labour that form some kind of progressive elements in the two parties which is why Prime Minister Gordon Brown mentioned in his short comment which he indicated his desire to vacate his position from No 10 Downing Street the Seat of the Government. Though the Labour came second in the election  with 258 MPs  yet their alliance with the Liberals is more likely to bear fruit together with small other parties as they appear to be two birds of the same feather that can flock together. This gives some more rays of hope rather than despair and hopefully something fruitful may come out of the so called horse trading between the three main parties in the end they may look for the special interest of the Nation rather than political differences or the alliance that may not work.

Similarly in Nigeria after the death of the President Umar Musa ‘ Yar Adua the Parliament sworn in the Acting President Dr Jonathan Goodluck  to replace the Late President who had been sick  since November last year before his demise. Jonathan was the Vice President of the Late Umaru ‘Yar Adua and had been Acting President  since he was sworn in and discharging his duties honourably as expected .

Constitutionally  as Acting President he could not have the Vice President  in place so the demise of the Late had paved way for him to choose his Vice President. It is understood that the President has nominated the present Secretary to the Government Yayale Ahmed veteran and seen as sincere  to be his Vice President a right choice giving his clout a seasoned civil servant who had no much ambition like the other so called politicians that cannot be trusted. It is said one of the former Presidents who is so ambitious is trying to force his own candidate on President Jonathan as usual in order to show to the world that he is in control of the Ruling Party the unfortunate 3rd World type of politics.

President Jonathan who has made his own choice should stick to his choice and no amount of pressure could make him budge which we all support him should be left alone to exercise his right as the sitting President who is so lucky to get good adviser like Yayale Ahmed a sincere Civil Servant whom we hope would turn a sincere politician and make a good Vice President in the interest of the Nation who mourn the demise of President ‘Yar Adua. We must put aside all political differences and come with the right choice at the right time when the Nation is in need of sincere political direction rather than traditional vested interest which do harm to all of us collectively.

This is the right time to make the right choice and the President should be encouraged and the whole Nation should be behind him not discouraging him when he makes the right choice for the good of the Country as Late Yar Adua tried his best to bring peace in the Country especially in the Niger Delta during his short period of Presidency. So President Goodluck should be left alone to make his own choice of his Vice not imposed on him by anybody for their own selfish interest  as some politicians wanted  him to  be the President  only on paper while they continue steering the wheel from the back this is unacceptable to the Nigerian populace who have matured politically.
