The attempts to extinguish the
light of Islam started when the da'wah of
Islam was first conveyed by Rasulullah SAW. It never
stops and continues to these days in Indonesia. Since
the issue of terrorists and terrorism was raised, the
government of the RI (Republic of Indonesia) are so
eager to put out the spirit of the implementation of
Shari'a with da'wah dan jihad
fie sabilillah. Through the institution of the
POLRI and the anti-terror executor team i.e. Densus
88, which was jointly created with foreign countries,
they brutally arrested the ulama's of the
Mujahideen and the Mujahideen, even killing and
slaughtering them blindly and inhumanely. A former
expert staff of the Kapolri (head of the Indonesian
police), Anton Tabah, said that what usually made
people extreme and radical are the verses of the
Qur'an, QS. Al-Maidah (5): 44 ,45, 47 which read:
"If any fail to judge
by what Allah has revealed, they are kafir."
(QS. 5: 44)
"If any fail to judge
by what Allah has revealed, they are dzalim."
(QS. 5: 45)
"If any fail to judge
by what Allah has revealed, they are fasiq."
(QS. 5: 47)
"Where the kafir, dzalim and fasiq are the
dwellers of hell. If someone has his understanding
locked onto these verses in black and white, then he
would become an extreme radical. It is from here that
‘the recruiter ustadz' who recruits prospective
members of terrorists, usually utilizes the naiveness
of the public on their religion. This is one of the
answers why the terrorism network in Indonesia is able
to recruit new members." (Anton Tabah, KR

The above verses is a correction on the attitude of
the authorities who are Muslims and reluctant to obey
the guidance of Allah and His Rasul, and give priority
to the opinions and urges of their carnal desires than
the Shari'a of Allah SWT. The mufassirin
understand these verses as an obligation on the rulers
to implement the Shari'a of Islam, those who
deny and reject it are declared as Kafir if
the denial was based on the confidence that the
Shari'a of Islam is not suitable and has no good
in it in order to regulate mankind.
The label Dzalim is applied for mankind,
whether individuals or groups of people or the rulers
who reject the Shari'a of Islam on the basis
of belief that there is other law besides the
Shari'a of Islam which is better and more
suitable for the regulation of human life, then they
choose the jahiliah or secular law as a
replacement for the Shari'a of Islam.
The same goes with an individual or group of people
who are labelled as Fasiq due to disobeying
Allah and His Rasul. They know and believe in the
truth of the law of Allah (Shari'a of Islam)
and that it is the one and only law which is good and
just for regulating mankind, but are refusing to
practice it due to the dunya or worldly
motivations. For instance, the state officials who
fear being removed from office or his workplace to be
transferred if he is inclined and involved in the
movement of the implementation of the Shari'a
of Islam.
Therefore, the above three verses have no relation
with the objective, as well as motivation of
terrorism. There was not even one mufassir
since the time of the Sahabahs to the
mufassir in today's era who interpret the above
verses like Anton Tabah. The above verses could not be
made as justification for terrorism, whoever the actor
and whatever the motivation is. Are the actions of the
Densus 88 which persecuted, shot and killed the
accused terrorists without any reason that can be
legally justified, a justification by the
Pancasila and UUD 45?
Therefore, linking the above verses with terrorism is
clearly a fitnah and a blasphemy against the
religion of Islam all at once. Likewise, judging the
Mujahids who fought for the establishment of the
Shari'a of Islam as terrorists or vice versa,
positioning the terrorists as Mujahids, is clearly a
negative and evil provocation. We worry that such an
assumption could incite a new conflict where the
political consequences are difficult to predict.
President SBY, in his state speech during the
celebration of the 64th anniversary of the RI's
independence on 16th August 2009, stated that the
sources of terrorism are backwardness, injustices and
poverty. SBY did not touch on the involvement of a
certain group or religious teachings as the trigger
for terrorism in Indonesia at all.
However, unlike the comments of SBY, are the comments
made by the intelligence apparatuses, including
comments made by ambivalent Islamic figures. The
emergence of the intelligence champions as of late
such as Amsyad Mbai, Hendropriyono, Suryadarma,
including Anton Tabah, who accused the religious
understandings as the ideology of terrorism and not
helping in solving the problems of terrorism. But on
the other hand, they should be suspected as running
the global agenda, as accomplices of the foreign
imperialism and zionism. It is not impossible that by
using the momentum of combating terrorism, they seek
to cover the shame of their past which are brutal and
sadistic against the Islamic movement by inserting and
sowing fitnah. Consequently, what is
considered as the danger from the crooked path of the
terrorists for using religious teachings as
justification of their actions, the security
apparatuses are equally committing the same
crookedness.
By examining the speech of Anton Tabah above, which
hints at the Qur'an as the cause of radicalism, and
the teachings of the Qur'an which have the most
potential to cause radicalism and terrorism, in
harmony with that view, are the teaching of
Shari'a and Jihad. With that view, it
means that the teachings of shari'a and
jihad must be switched off or kept away from the
lives of the Islamic ummah. If this happens,
then it means that the government of the RI desires to
extinguish the truth just like the condition of the
kafir and mushrik during the time of
Rasulullah SAW.
"They want to
extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but
Allah refuses except to perfect His light, although
the disbelievers dislike it."
(At-Tawbah: 32 and As-Saff 61:8)
Advices To The Government
The effort of de-radicalization, in which the purpose
is to deter the shari'a and jihad in
Indonesia, is not a wise and intellectual solution,
instead it will lead to antipathy and hatred against
the ruling government. Why not? Major problems which
should be the center of attention such as the problem
of corruption by the government officials, the issues
of apostatization, the issue of the Century Bank case
and the likes, are not even solved completely. And we
are confident that this effort will fail and it will
not achieve the target forever. Because Allah has
guaranteed that His religion continues to shine and
nothing can block its light from shining to every
corner. Then the steps that should be taken by the
government are;
1) By dissolving the anti-terror detachment which have
made the Islamic ummah restless and scared to
practice the shari'a of their religion
because of the terror from the anti-terror detachment.
2) By arresting the terrorist personnels of the
detachment who have brutally detained, shot and
murdered the Islamic ummah who are suspected
to be linked to terrorism, and prosecuting them in
accordance with the effective laws intended for the
real terrorists.
3) By facilitating the entire competent institutions
and organizations, to solve the issues of terrorists
and terrorism, from amongst the ulama's,
mujahideens-the upholders of shari'a,
academics and government to sit together discussing
and solving the problems thoroughly.
4) And so that the government seriously make the
effort to apply the Islamic Shari'a in
Indonesia and into the constitution of the state.
Insha Allah, all those incidents that happen
such as today will stop, all forms of corruptions,
murders, robberies, calamities and disasters and etc.
will be replaced by Allah with rahmah and
barakah from Him. Allah says:
"And if only the
people of the cities had believed and feared Allah, We
would have opened [i.e. bestowed] upon them blessings
from the heaven and the earth." (QS. Al-A'raf
: 96)
Thus, with that, this Indonesia will become a State
which is called: Baldatun Toyyibatun Warabbun
Gafur, A Good State Which Attains The Forgiveness
Of Allah.
