Assalaamu Alaikum (Greetings of Peace):
Insha'Allah, we will speak
at Masjid
Bilal -
located at 400 Chimborazo Blvd, Richmond, Virginia
23223 - this coming Friday (Jan 25) for jumuah; and
later conduct an evening forum on the case of Dr.
Aafia Siddiqui (and
the equally important peripheral issues surrounding
her case) at the same location.
On Saturday evening (Jan
26) I will deliver my long awaited presentation on "My
Journey to Islam," at
the Prince
Georges Muslim Association (PGMA) in
Lanham, Maryland.
While in the wake of the very unfortunate outcome of
the Algerian hostage crisis some have encouraged me
to write the commentary that I had originally intended
anyway - at least the substance of it - I feel that
I've already said enough on the matter (all things
considered). I am instead forwarding a statement from
the family of
Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, on the Algerian hostage crisis. The
statement is followed by the family's request for
supporters worldwide to write to Aafia (via
postcards), and to donate to the campaign for Aafia
(in whatever way you can). I want
to emphasize POSTCARDS! A number of well wishers have
communicated over the past year, that their letters
are being returned with the message that Aafia has
refused to receive them. While we don't know exactly what's
going on, we have an idea. And if we're correct, it's
all part of her captors' internal manipulations to
keep Aafia cut off from the outside world, and to
diminish public support for her.
PLEASE SEND POSTCARDS - which
do not have to be opened -
bearing a brief and encouraging message of concern and
solidarity. This will benefit Aafia, even if she
doesn't receive it. ( For it will serve as a constant
reminder to her jailors that she is not forgotten, and
support for her is continuing to grow!)
Donate for Dr. Aafia's Legal Defense, Investigation to
find her Missing Child, and for Case Advocacy! Dr.
Aafia's family is working with groups around the world
to secure funding and continue the legal defense and
advocacy for Dr. Aafia, including investigations into
the disappearance of her children and the fate of
young Suleman who is still missing after almost eight
years. To

"Ms. Siddiqui was allegedly subject to unlawful
imprisonment and interrogation and following her
ordeal was deported to the United States to face
charges of attacking her captors. Contributing to the
defense of an individual under these circumstances is
not only perfectly legal, it is - to quote Judge
Webster in the highest tradition of American
values.'" Charles D. Swift. Attorney at Law
NOTE: Regarding Donations to MLFA: The
Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA) is no longer
involved with funding for Dr. Aafia's case and any
monies donated to them will not go towards any aspect
of Dr. Aafia's case. The
family have requested that MLFA kindly cease to use
Dr. Aafia's case, her name, statements or any
statement from family members for their fund raising
activities in order to avoid confusion among potential
donors.
