The Myth that Sex on Tuesdays Is Harmful: Ghusl Following Intercourse Obligatory Even If No Ejaculation

Islamic Questions & Answers

I have heard that you are not supposed to have sex on Tuesdays....and there is something that comes that night which then curses all those who are doing it...and they suffer somehow later...then please reply me and inform me about the correct information from hadeeths or Quran.

Praise be to Allaah.

I know, may Allaah teach us and you, that this is one of the myths and innovations that have no basis on the Qur'aan or Sunnah. It is like the things said by the people who follow innovations and are misguided, so they say that it is makrooh to get married when the moon is in Scorpio or when it is under the rays (???), or when it is waning or in any of its other stages. (See Mu'jam al-Bida' by Raa'id Sabri, 656)

Allaah has permitted intercourse at all times and in all places, with the following exceptions:

* During the day in Ramadaan: Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning), "It is made lawful for you to have sexual relations with your wives on the night of as-siyaam (the fasts). They are libaas (body cover, screen, etc.) for you and you are the same for them. Allaah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He turned to you (accepted your repentance) and forgave you. So now have sexual relations with them and seek that which Allaah has ordained for you (offspring)…" (Al-Baqarah: 187)

 * During the woman's period (hayd) and when she is still bleeding after childbirth [nifaas]: Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning), "They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is an adha (a harmful thing for a husband to have a sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses), therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they are purified (from menses and have taken a bath). And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as Allaah has ordained for you…" (Al-Baqarah: 222)

* In the mosques: Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning), "… And do not have sexual relations with them (your wives) while you are in I'tikaaf (i.e. confining oneself in a mosque for prayers and invocations leaving the worldly activities) in the mosques. These are the limits (set) by Allaah, so approach them not…" (Al-Baqarah: 187)

And in other situations, such as when one is muhrim (in a state of ihraam for Hajj or ‘Umrah). You will not find anything in the Qur'aan or Sunnah to confirm this lie. It is a kind of evil falsehood that has cheated a lot of people, so now they hold it as some kind of inflexible belief. Many people have had intercourse with their wives on a Tuesday and have conceived healthy children. No harm has befallen either them or their children because of that. May Allaah protect us and you from bid'ah and evil! And Allaah knows best!

It Is Obligatory To Do Ghusl Following Intercourse Even If No Ejaculation Takes Place

If intercourse takes place and there is no ejaculation, is ghusl[1] required? Or is it only required if ejaculation takes place?

Praise be to Allaah.

The scholars are unanimously agreed that ghusl is required in the event of intercourse. (Al-Mawsoo'ah al-Fiqhiyyah, 3/198)

If a man has intercourse with his wife, they must both do ghusl even if there is no ejaculation. This was narrated clearly from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in the report narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him), according to which the Prophet of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "When a man sits between the four parts (arms and legs of his wife) and has intercourse with her, then ghusl is obligatory." Narrated by Al-Bukhaari No. 291, Muslim added (525), "Even if he does not ejaculate."

An-Nawawi said in Sharh Muslim: What this hadeeth means is that the obligation of ghusl does not depend on the emission of semen, rather when the tip of the penis disappears into the vagina, then ghusl becomes obligatory for both the man and the woman. There is no dispute concerning this matter today, although there was a difference of opinion among the Sahaabah[2] and those who came after them. Then there arose consensus on what we have mentioned. End quote.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: It is clear that ghusl is required in this case, even if he does not ejaculate. This is something that is not known to many people, so you may find that this has happened to a couple, but they do not do ghusl, especially if they are young and have not learned much. This is based on their idea that ghusl is only required when ejaculation takes place, but this is wrong. End quote. (Ash-Sharh al-Mumti', 1/223)

It says in Fataawa al-Lajnah ad-Daa'imah (5/314), "Among the things that make ghusl obligatory for a Muslim are: the emission of semen whilst sleeping; the disappearing of the tip of the penis into the vagina even if no ejaculation takes place; the emission of semen with pleasure when one is awake, even if no intercourse takes place; and menses and nifaas (postpartum bleeding) in the case of a woman, in which case she must do ghusl when the bleeding stops." End quote.
