Question
As-salamu 'Alaykum warahmatullah wabarakatuh (May Allah's Peace, Mercy, and
Blessings be upon you!). I mean with Silver Ramadan watching TV during
Ramadan. The story begins with: I am a religious young man or I seem to be
like this but my parents are not.
They give me and my brethren the freedom to be religious or not and I am the
elder brother.
I have younger brothers and sisters and I have some power in the family. After
my father had grown old, he allowed me to rear my brethren and teach them
knowledge, however the biggest problem is that we have a satellite at home and
I cannot control the channels which my brothers and sisters watch because I am
not always at home.
Now, Ramadan is forthcoming with many series. I go out early to perform
Tarawih [Special voluntary night Salah during Ramadan] and I come back late,
how can I deal with this situation? The biggest problem is: My brothers and
sisters sit together with my father and watch these satellite channels and
movies, so it is hard to turn off the TV or command them to go out. Moreover,
at breaking the fast, the TV is on to view an interesting series; what should
I do?
Answer
Dear Muslim brother, Wa 'Alaykumus-Salam war-Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh (peace
be upon you). In the beginning, I ask Allah to grant you success, make you
firm on the truth, and reward you for your interest in calling others to the
way of Allah and trying to reform your parents as well as your brothers and
sisters.
You can solve your problem by the following:
1- Explain to them the danger of satellite channels which display forbidden
movies and series, explaining that they are from the most dangerous reasons
for the weakness of religion, reason, and bad manners.
2- Explain to them the virtue of the month of Ramadan and its
sanctity and explain to them that it is the month of mercy, piety, the Qur'an,
acts of worship, obedience, and repentance. Allah (Glory be to Him) says: "O
you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fast) is prescribed for you as it was
prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqűn (the pious)."
* [Observing Saum (fast)] for a fixed number of days, but if any of you is ill
or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days. And as
for those who can fast with difficulty, (e.g. an old man), they have (a choice
either to fast or) to feed a Miskîn (needy person) (for every day missed). But
whoever does good of his own accord, it is better for him. And that you fast
is better for you if only you know. *
"The month of
Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'ân, a guidance for mankind and clear
proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So
whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of
Ramadan i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fast) that month,
and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not
observe Saum (fast) must be made up] from other days. Allâh intends for you
ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that
you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allâh
[i.e. To say Takbîr (Allâhu Akbar; Allâh is the Most Great)] for having guided
you so that you may be grateful to Him." [Surat Al Baqarah: 183 - 185].
Ibn Kathir said: "Allah (Glory be to Him) praises the month of
Ramadan for choosing it to send down the Qur'an therein. A Hadith was reported
that it is the month during which all divine messages were revealed to
Prophets." [Tafsir Ibn Kathir, vol. 1, p. 501].
3-
Show softness, humbleness, and calmness during explaining the truth, observe
patience, and try to draw nearer to your brethren with gifts, such as: Books
and useful tapes which explain the danger of satellite channels on individuals
and on the society.
4- Grading in advice and quiet discussion, and look at the nearest brother or
sister who will be convinced with your ideas and try to convince him or her
bit by bit.
5- Try to find permissible alternatives such as: Convincing them that Al Magd
satellite channel will replace the prohibited channels, suggest to make
cultural competitions, interesting programs, and suitable prizes.
6- Invoke Allah to grant your parents righteousness and guidance, and know
that invocation is part of their rights on you, and invoke Allah for your
brothers in these blessed days; perhaps Allah would grant them repentance and
forgiveness.
I ask Allah to grant guidance and repentance to your parents and brethren
during these blessed month and to make you and us firm on the Straight Path.
May Allah grant us success and help us.
