Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn
[mankind].
Muhsin Khan
We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No:
97) in the month of Ramadan,, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We
are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in
Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship].
Pickthall
Lo! We revealed it on a blessed night - Lo! We are ever warning -
Yusuf Ali
We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against
Evil).
Shakir
Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning--
Dr. Ghali
Surely We have sent it down in a blessed night; surely We have been warning.
There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord
and the Lord of your first forefathers.
Muhsin Khan
La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who
gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers.
Pickthall
There is no Allah save Him. He quickeneth and giveth death; your Lord and Lord
of your forefathers.
Yusuf Ali
There is no god but He: It is He Who gives life and gives death,- The Lord and
Cherisher to you and your earliest ancestors.
Shakir
There is no god but He; He gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord
of your fathers of yore.
Dr. Ghali
There is no god except He; He gives life and He makes to die; (He is) your Lord
and The Lord of your earliest fathers.
How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them
a clear Messenger.
Muhsin Khan
How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has
reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to
them.
Pickthall
How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth)
had already come unto them,
Yusuf Ali
How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger
explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,-
Shakir
How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Messenger making clear
(the truth),
Dr. Ghali
However could they have the Reminding, and an evident Messenger has already come
to them,
And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to
them a noble messenger,
Muhsin Khan
And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to
them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses) ],
Pickthall
And verily We tried before them Pharaoh's folk, when there came unto them a
noble messenger,
Yusuf Ali
We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger
most honourable,
Shakir
And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a
noble messenger,
Dr. Ghali
And indeed already before them We tempted the people of Firaawn, (Pharaoh) and
an honorable Messenger came to them. (Saying), "Discharge (Literally: give back
to me) to me the bondmen of Allah; surely I am for you a trustworthy Messenger."
And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.
Muhsin Khan
(But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying):
"These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists,
sinners, criminals, etc.)."
Pickthall
And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk.
Yusuf Ali
(But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a
people given to sin."
Shakir
Then he called upon his Lord: These are a guilty people.
From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.
Muhsin Khan
From Fir'aun (Pharaoh); Verily! He was arrogant and was of the Musrifun (those
who transgress beyond bound in spending and other things and commit great sins).
Pickthall
(We delivered them) from Pharaoh. Lo! he was a tyrant of the wanton ones.
Yusuf Ali
Inflicted by Pharaoh, for he was arrogant (even) among inordinate transgressors.
Shakir
From Firon; surely he was haughty, (and) one of the extravagant.
Dr. Ghali
From Firaawn; (Pharaoh) surely he was exalted, of the extravagant.
Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed
them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.
Muhsin Khan
Are they better or the people of Tubba' and those before them? We destroyed them
because they were indeed Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners,
criminals, etc.).
Pickthall
Are they better, or the folk of Tubb'a and those before them? We destroyed them,
for surely they were guilty.
Yusuf Ali
What! Are they better than the people of Tubba and those who were before them?
We destroyed them because they were guilty of sin.
Shakir
Are they better or the people of Tubba and those before them? We destroyed them,
for surely they were guilty.
Dr. Ghali
Are they more charitable, (i.e., better) or the people of Tubbac and the ones
even before them? We caused them to perish; surely they were criminals.
We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.
Muhsin Khan
We created them not except with truth (i.e. to examine and test those who are
obedient and those who are disobedient and then reward the obedient ones and
punish the disobedient ones), but most of them know not.
Pickthall
We created them not save with truth; but most of them know not.
Yusuf Ali
We created them not except for just ends: but most of them do not understand.
Shakir
We did not create them both but with the truth, but most of them do not know.
Dr. Ghali
In no way did We create them both except with The Truth; but most of them do not
know.
