O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies,
extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of
the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you
believe in Allah , your Lord. If you have come out for jihad in My cause and
seeking means to My approval, [take them not as friends]. You confide to them
affection, but I am most knowing of what you have concealed and what you have
declared. And whoever does it among you has certainly strayed from the soundness
of the way.
Muhsin Khan
O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and
polytheists, etc.) as friends, showing affection towards them, while they have
disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth (i.e. Islamic Monotheism, this
Quran, and Muhammad SAW), and have driven out the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) and
yourselves (from your homeland) because you believe in Allah your Lord! If you
have come forth to strive in My Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (then take
not these disbelievers and polytheists, etc., as your friends). You show
friendship to them in secret, while I am All-Aware of what you conceal and what
you reveal. And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone
(far) astray, (away) from the Straight Path.
Pickthall
O ye who believe! Choose not My enemy and your enemy for allies. Do ye give them
friendship when they disbelieve in that truth which hath come unto you, driving
out the messenger and you because ye believe in Allah, your Lord? If ye have
come forth to strive in My way and seeking My good pleasure, (show them not
friendship). Do ye show friendship unto them in secret, when I am Best Aware of
what ye hide and what ye proclaim? And whosoever doeth it among you, he verily
hath strayed from the right way.
Yusuf Ali
O ye who believe! Take not my enemies and yours as friends (or protectors),-
offering them (your) love, even though they have rejected the Truth that has
come to you, and have (on the contrary) driven out the Prophet and yourselves
(from your homes), (simply) because ye believe in Allah your Lord! If ye have
come out to strive in My Way and to seek My Good Pleasure, (take them not as
friends), holding secret converse of love (and friendship) with them: for I know
full well all that ye conceal and all that ye reveal. And any of you that does
this has strayed from the Straight Path.
Shakir
O you who believe! do not take My enemy and your enemy for friends: would you
offer them love while they deny what has come to you of the truth, driving out
the Messenger and yourselves because you believe in Allah, your Lord? If you go
forth struggling hard in My path and seeking My pleasure, would you manifest
love to them? And I know what you conceal and what you manifest; and whoever of
you does this, he indeed has gone astray from the straight path.
Dr. Ghali
O you who have believed, do not take to yourselves My enemy and your enemy for
patrons, casting forth to them (your) amity, and they have already disbelieved
in what has come to you of the Truth, driving the Messenger and you (too) for
that you believe in Allah, your Lord, in case you have gone out striving in My
way and seeking My Supreme Satisfaction, secretly having amity towards them. And
I know best whatever you conceal and whatever you make public; and whoever of
you performs it, then he has already erred away from the level way.
If they gain dominance over you, they would be to you as enemies and extend
against you their hands and their tongues with evil, and they wish you would
disbelieve.
Muhsin Khan
Should they gain the upper hand over you, they would behave to you as enemies,
and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they
desire that you should disbelieve.
Pickthall
If they have the upper hand of you, they will be your foes, and will stretch out
their hands and their tongues toward you with evil (intent), and they long for
you to disbelieve.
Yusuf Ali
If they were to get the better of you, they would behave to you as enemies, and
stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you for evil: and they
desire that ye should reject the Truth.
Shakir
If they find you, they will be your enemies, and will stretch forth towards you
their hands and their tongues with evil, and they ardently desire that you may
disbelieve.
Dr. Ghali
In case they catch you, they will be enemies to you and stretch against you
their hands and their tongues with odiousness; and they would (like that) you
would disbelieve.
Never will your relatives or your children benefit you; the Day of Resurrection
He will judge between you. And Allah , of what you do, is Seeing.
Muhsin Khan
Neither your relatives nor your children will benefit you on the Day of
Resurrection (against Allah). He will judge between you. And Allah is the
All-Seer of what you do.
Pickthall
Your ties of kindred and your children will avail you naught upon the Day of
Resurrection. He will part you. Allah is Seer of what ye do.
Yusuf Ali
Of no profit to you will be your relatives and your children on the Day of
Judgment: He will judge between you: for Allah sees well all that ye do.
Shakir
Your relationship would not profit you, nor your children on the day of
resurrection; He will decide between you; and Allah sees what you do.
Dr. Ghali
Your bonds of kin or your children will never profit you on the Day of the
Resurrection. He will distingnish between you, and Allah is Ever-Beholding of
whatever you do.
There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with
him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and
from whatever you worship other than Allah . We have denied you, and there has
appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in
Allah alone" except for the saying of Abraham to his father, "I will surely ask
forgiveness for you, but I have not [power to do] for you anything against Allah
. Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is
the destination.
Muhsin Khan
Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and
those with him, when they said to their people: "Verily, we are free from you
and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has
started between us and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in
Allah Alone," except the saying of Ibrahim (Abraham) to his father: "Verily, I
will ask for forgiveness (from Allah) for you, but I have no power to do
anything for you before Allah." Our Lord! In You (Alone) we put our trust, and
to You (Alone) we turn in repentance, and to You (Alone) is (our) final Return,
Pickthall
There is a goodly pattern for you in Abraham and those with him, when they told
their folk: Lo! we are guiltless of you and all that ye worship beside Allah. We
have done with you. And there hath arisen between us and you hostility and hate
for ever until ye believe in Allah only - save that which Abraham promised his
father (when he said): I will ask forgiveness for thee, though I own nothing for
thee from Allah - Our Lord! In Thee we put our trust, and unto Thee we turn
repentant, and unto Thee is the journeying.
Yusuf Ali
There is for you an excellent example (to follow) in Abraham and those with him,
when they said to their people: "We are clear of you and of whatever ye worship
besides Allah: we have rejected you, and there has arisen, between us and you,
enmity and hatred for ever,- unless ye believe in Allah and Him alone": But not
when Abraham said to his father: "I will pray for forgiveness for thee, though I
have no power (to get) aught on thy behalf from Allah." (They prayed): "Our
Lord! in Thee do we trust, and to Thee do we turn in repentance: to Thee is
(our) Final Goal.
Shakir
Indeed, there is for you a good example in Ibrahim and those with him when they
said to their people: Surely we are clear of you and of what you serve besides
Allah; we declare ourselves to be clear of you, and enmity and hatred have
appeared between us and you forever until you believe in Allah alone-- but not
in what Ibrahim said to his father: I would certainly ask forgiveness for you,
and I do not control for you aught from Allah-- Our Lord! on Thee do we rely,
and to Thee do we turn, and to Thee is the eventual coming:
Dr. Ghali
You have already had a fair example in Ibrahim (Abraham) and the ones with him
as they said to their people, "Surely we are completely quit of you and whatever
you worship apart from Allah. We disbelieve in you, and between you and us
enmity has appeared, and abhorrence forever, until you believe in Allah alone."
Except that Ibrahim said to his father, "Indeed I will definitely ask
forgiveness for you; and in no way do I possess anything for you from Allah."
"Our Lord, in (Literally: no You) You we trust, and to You we turn penitent, and
to You is the Destiny.
Our Lord, make us not [objects of] torment for the disbelievers and forgive us,
our Lord. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
Muhsin Khan
"Our Lord! Make us not a trial for the disbelievers, and forgive us, Our Lord!
Verily, You, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."
Pickthall
Our Lord! Make us not a prey for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord!
Lo! Thou, only Thou, are the Mighty, the Wise.
Yusuf Ali
"Our Lord! Make us not a (test and) trial for the Unbelievers, but forgive us,
our Lord! for Thou art the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
Shakir
Our Lord! do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our
Lord! surely Thou art the Mighty, the Wise.
Dr. Ghali
Our Lord, do not make us a temptation to the ones who have disbelieved; and
forgive us. Our Lord, surely You, Ever You, are The Ever-Mighty, The Ever-Wise."
There has certainly been for you in them an excellent pattern for anyone whose
hope is in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever turns away - then indeed, Allah
is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.
Muhsin Khan
Certainly, there has been in them an excellent example for you to follow, for
those who look forward to (the Meeting with) Allah (for the reward from Him) and
the Last Day. And whosoever turn away, then verily, Allah is Rich (Free of all
wants), Worthy of all Praise.
Pickthall
Verily ye have in them a goodly pattern for everyone who looketh to Allah and
the Last Day. And whosoever may turn away, lo! still Allah, He is the Absolute,
the Owner of Praise.
Yusuf Ali
There was indeed in them an excellent example for you to follow,- for those
whose hope is in Allah and in the Last Day. But if any turn away, truly Allah is
Free of all Wants, Worthy of all Praise.
Shakir
Certainly there is for you in them a good example, for him who fears Allah and
the last day; and whoever turns back, then surely Allah is the Self-sufficient,
the Praised.
Dr. Ghali
Indeed you have already had a fair example in them for whoever hopes for Allah
and the Last Day. And whoever turns away, then surely Allah, Ever He, is The
Ever-Affluent, (Literally: The Ever-Rich) The Ever-Praiseworthy.
Perhaps Allah will put, between you and those to whom you have been enemies
among them, affection. And Allah is competent, and Allah is Forgiving and
Merciful.
Muhsin Khan
Perhaps Allah will make friendship between you and those whom you hold as
enemies. And Allah has power (over all things), and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most
Merciful.
Pickthall
It may be that Allah will ordain love between you and those of them with whom ye
are at enmity. Allah is Mighty, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
Yusuf Ali
It may be that Allah will grant love (and friendship) between you and those whom
ye (now) hold as enemies. For Allah has power (over all things); And Allah is
Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Shakir
It may be that Allah will bring about friendship between you and those whom you
hold to be your enemies among them; and Allah is Powerful; and Allah is
Forgiving, Merciful.
Dr. Ghali
It may be that Allah will set up (Literally: make) amity between you and
(between) the ones of them with whom you are at enmity; and Allah is
Ever-Determiner, and Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful
Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion
and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and
acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
Muhsin Khan
Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not
against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes.
Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity.
Pickthall
Allah forbiddeth you not those who warred not against you on account of religion
and drove you not out from your homes, that ye should show them kindness and
deal justly with them. Lo! Allah loveth the just dealers.
Yusuf Ali
Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith
nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for
Allah loveth those who are just.
Shakir
Allah does not forbid you respecting those who have not made war against you on
account of (your) religion, and have not driven you forth from your homes, that
you show them kindness and deal with them justly; surely Allah loves the doers
of justice.
Dr. Ghali
Allah does not forbid you (as regards) the ones who have not fought you on
account of the religion and have not driven you out of your residences that you
should be benign to them and be equitable towards them; surely Allah loves the
equitable.
Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel
you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies
of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the
wrongdoers.
Muhsin Khan
It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and
have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah
forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are
the Zalimun (wrong-doers those who disobey Allah).
Pickthall
Allah forbiddeth you only those who warred against you on account of religion
and have driven you out from your homes and helped to drive you out, that ye
make friends of them. Whosoever maketh friends of them - (All) such are
wrong-doers.
Yusuf Ali
Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and
drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from
turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in
these circumstances), that do wrong.
Shakir
Allah only forbids you respecting those who made war upon you on account of
(your) religion, and drove you forth from your homes and backed up (others) in
your expulsion, that you make friends with them, and whoever makes friends with
them, these are the unjust.
Dr. Ghali
Surely Allah only forbids you as to the ones who have fought you on account of
the religion, and driven you out of your homes, and backed (others) in driving
you out, that you should patronize them; and whoever patronizes them, then those
are they who are the unjust.
O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants,
examine them. Allah is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to
be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful
[wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give the
disbelievers what they have spent. And there is no blame upon you if you marry
them when you have given them their due compensation. And hold not to marriage
bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them ask
for what they have spent. That is the judgement of Allah ; He judges between
you. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
Muhsin Khan
O you who believe! When believing women come to you as emigrants, examine them,
Allah knows best as to their Faith, then if you ascertain that they are true
believers, send them not back to the disbelievers, they are not lawful (wives)
for the disbelievers nor are the disbelievers lawful (husbands) for them. But
give the disbelievers that (amount of money) which they have spent [as their
Mahr] to them. And there will be no sin on you to marry them if you have paid
their Mahr to them. Likewise hold not the disbelieving women as wives, and ask
for (the return of) that which you have spent (as Mahr) and let them (the
disbelievers, etc.) ask back for that which they have spent. That is the
Judgement of Allah. He judges between you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Pickthall
O ye who believe! When believing women come unto you as fugitives, examine them.
Allah is Best Aware of their faith. Then, if ye know them for true believers,
send them not back unto the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them (the
disbelievers), nor are they (the disbelievers) lawful for them. And give them
(the disbelievers) that which they have spent (upon them). And it is no sin for
you to marry such women when ye have given them their dues. And hold not to the
ties of disbelieving women; and ask for (the return of) that which ye have
spent; and let them (the disbelievers) ask for that which they have spent. That
is the judgment of Allah. He judgeth between you. Allah is Knower, Wise.
Yusuf Ali
O ye who believe! When there come to you believing women refugees, examine (and
test) them: Allah knows best as to their Faith: if ye ascertain that they are
Believers, then send them not back to the Unbelievers. They are not lawful
(wives) for the Unbelievers, nor are the (Unbelievers) lawful (husbands) for
them. But pay the Unbelievers what they have spent (on their dower), and there
will be no blame on you if ye marry them on payment of their dower to them. But
hold not to the guardianship of unbelieving women: ask for what ye have spent on
their dowers, and let the (Unbelievers) ask for what they have spent (on the
dowers of women who come over to you). Such is the command of Allah: He judges
(with justice) between you. And Allah is Full of Knowledge and Wisdom.
Shakir
O you who believe! when believing women come to you flying, then examine them;
Allah knows best their faith; then if you find them to be believing women, do
not send them back to the unbelievers, neither are these (women) lawful for
them, nor are those (men) lawful for them, and give them what they have spent;
and no blame attaches to you in marrying them when you give them their dowries;
and hold not to the ties of marriage of unbelieving women, and ask for what you
have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent. That is Allah's judgment;
He judges between you, and Allah is Knowing, Wise.
Dr. Ghali
O you who have believed, when female believers come to you as migrants (i.e.,
those who have left their homes. The Arabic word means both emigrants and
immigrants) then test them Allah best knows their belief. So in case you know
them to be believers, then do not return them to the steadfast disbelievers.
They are not lawful (wives) to the disbelievers, nor are the disbelievers lawful
(husbands) for them. And bring (the disbelievers) what they have expended; and
there is no fault in you to marry them (The female believers) when you have
brought them (The female believers) their (due) rewards. And do not hold back
the ties (i.e., marriage bonds) of the disbelieving women and ask what you have
expended, (i.e., do not keep disbelieving women as wives; ask for the return of
the dower you paid to them) and let them (The pronoun is masculine plural; i.e.,
the disbelievers) ask what they (The pronoun is masculine plural; i.e., the
disbelievers) have expended. That is the Judgment of Allah; He judges between
you; and Allah is Ever-Knowing, Ever-Wise.
And if you have lost any of your wives to the disbelievers and you subsequently
obtain [something], then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what
they had spent. And fear Allah , in whom you are believers.
Muhsin Khan
And if any of your wives have gone from you to the disbelievers, and you have an
accession (by the coming over of a woman from the other side), then pay to those
whose wives have gone, the equivalent of what they had spent (on their Mahr).
And fear Allah in Whom you believe.
Pickthall
And if any of your wives have gone from you unto the disbelievers and afterward
ye have your turn (of triumph), then give unto those whose wives have gone the
like of that which they have spent, and keep your duty to Allah in Whom ye are
believers.
Yusuf Ali
And if any of your wives deserts you to the Unbelievers, and ye have an
accession (by the coming over of a woman from the other side), then pay to those
whose wives have deserted the equivalent of what they had spent (on their
dower). And fear Allah, in Whom ye believe.
Shakir
And if anything (out of the dowries) of your wives has passed away from you to
the unbelievers, then your turn comes, give to those whose wives have gone away
the like of what they have spent, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah in Whom
you believe.
Dr. Ghali
And in case any of your spouses (Literally: anything from your spouses) eludes
you (Or: escapes from you) (to go over) to the steadfast disbelievers and then
you punish (in retaliation), then bring the ones whose spouses have gone away
the like of what they have expended. And be pious to Allah in Whom you are
believers.
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will
not associate anything with Allah , nor will they steal, nor will they commit
unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they
bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs, nor will
they disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness
for them of Allah . Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
Muhsin Khan
O Prophet! When believing women come to you to give you the Bai'a (pledge), that
they will not associate anything in worship with Allah, that they will not
steal, that they will not commit illegal sexual intercourse, that they will not
kill their children, that they will not utter slander, intentionally forging
falsehood (i.e. by making illegal children belonging to their husbands), and
that they will not disobey you in any Ma'ruf (Islamic Monotheism and all that
which Islam ordains) then accept their Bai'a (pledge), and ask Allah to forgive
them, Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Pickthall
O Prophet! If believing women come unto thee, taking oath of allegiance unto
thee that they will ascribe no thing as partner unto Allah, and will neither
steal nor commit adultery nor kill their children, nor produce any lie that they
have devised between their hands and feet, nor disobey thee in what is right,
then accept their allegiance and ask Allah to forgive them. Lo! Allah is
Forgiving, Merciful.
Yusuf Ali
O Prophet! When believing women come to thee to take the oath of fealty to thee,
that they will not associate in worship any other thing whatever with Allah,
that they will not steal, that they will not commit adultery (or fornication),
that they will not kill their children, that they will not utter slander,
intentionally forging falsehood, and that they will not disobey thee in any just
matter,- then do thou receive their fealty, and pray to Allah for the
forgiveness (of their sins): for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
Shakir
O Prophet! when believing women come to you giving you a pledge that they will
not associate aught with Allah, and will not steal, and will not commit
fornication, and will not kill their children, and will not bring a calumny
which they have forged of themselves, and will not disobey you in what is good,
accept their pledge, and ask forgiveness for them from Allah; surely Allah is
Forgiving, Merciful.
Dr. Ghali
O you Prophet, when female believers come to you, swearing allegiance to you
that they will not associate with Allah anything, and will not steal, nor commit
adultery, nor kill their children, nor come up with (i.e., bring) all-evident
calumny they fabricate between their hands and their legs, nor disobey you in
anything beneficent, then accept their allegiance and ask the forgiveness of
Allah for them. Surely Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Ever-Merciful.
O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allah has
become angry. They have despaired of [reward in] the Hereafter just as the
disbelievers have despaired of [meeting] the inhabitants of the graves.
Muhsin Khan
O you who believe! Take not as friends the people who incurred the Wrath of
Allah (i.e. the Jews). Surely, they have been in despair to receive any good in
the Hereafter, just as the disbelievers have been in despair about those
(buried) in graves (that they will not be resurrected on the Day of
Resurrection).
Pickthall
O ye who believe! Be not friendly with a folk with whom Allah is wroth, (a folk)
who have despaired of the Hereafter as the disbelievers despair of those who are
in the graves.
Yusuf Ali
O ye who believe! Turn not (for friendship) to people on whom is the Wrath of
Allah, of the Hereafter they are already in despair, just as the Unbelievers are
in despair about those (buried) in graves.
Shakir
O you who believe! do not make friends with a people with whom Allah is wroth;
indeed they despair of the hereafter as the unbelievers despair of those in
tombs.
Dr. Ghali
O you who have believed, do not patronize a people against whom Allah is angry,
(and) who have already despaired of the Hereafter, even as steadfast
disbelievers (i.e., occupants) have despaired of the companions of the tombs.
