Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the
sunrises.
Muhsin Khan
Lord of the heavens and of the earth, and all that is between them, and Lord of
every point of the sun's risings. (None has the right to be worshipped but
Allah).
Pickthall
Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all that is between them, and Lord of
the sun's risings.
Yusuf Ali
Lord of the heavens and of the earth and all between them, and Lord of every
point at the rising of the sun!
Shakir
The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and Lord of the
easts.
Dr. Ghali
The Lord of the heavens and the earth, and whatever is between them both and The
Lord of the easts.
Then inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Are they a stronger [or more difficult]
creation or those [others] We have created?" Indeed, We created men from sticky
clay.
Muhsin Khan
Then ask them (i.e. these polytheists, O Muhammad SAW): "Are they stronger as
creation, or those (others like the heavens and the earth and the mountains,
etc.) whom We have created?" Verily, We created them of a sticky clay.
Pickthall
Then ask them (O Muhammad): Are they stronger as a creation, or those (others)
whom we have created? Lo! We created them of plastic clay.
Yusuf Ali
Just ask their opinion: are they the more difficult to create, or the (other)
beings We have created? Them have We created out of a sticky clay!
Shakir
Then ask them whether they are stronger in creation or those (others) whom We
have created. Surely We created them of firm clay.
Dr. Ghali
So ask them for a pronouncement: "Are they more valiant as a creation or the
ones We created? Surely We created them of clinging clay."
They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."
Muhsin Khan
They will say: "It was you who used to come to us from the right side [i.e. from
the right side of one of us and beautify for us every evil, order us for
polytheism, and stop us from the truth i.e. Islamic Monotheism and from every
good deed]."
Pickthall
They say: Lo! ye used to come unto us, imposing, (swearing that ye spoke the
truth).
Yusuf Ali
They will say: "It was ye who used to come to us from the right hand (of power
and authority)!"
Shakir
They shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side.
Dr. Ghali
They (The seduced) say, "Surely you used to come up to us from the right hand."
(i.e. with the Truth).
Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allah ," were
arrogant
Muhsin Khan
Truly, when it was said to them: La ilaha ill-Allah "(none has the right to be
worshipped but Allah)," they puffed themselves up with pride (i.e. denied it).
Pickthall
For when it was said unto them, There is no Allah save Allah, they were scornful
Yusuf Ali
For they, when they were told that there is no god except Allah, would puff
themselves up with Pride,
Shakir
Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but
Allah;
Dr. Ghali
Surely when it was said to them, "There is no god except Allah, " they were
waxing proud.
Rather, the Prophet has come with the truth and confirmed the [previous]
messengers.
Muhsin Khan
Nay! he (Muhammad SAW) has come with the truth (i.e. Allah's Religion - Islamic
Monotheism and this Quran) and he confirms the Messengers (before him who
brought Allah's religion - Islamic Monotheism).
Pickthall
Nay, but he brought the Truth, and he confirmed those sent (before him).
Yusuf Ali
Nay! he has come with the (very) Truth, and he confirms (the Message of) the
messengers (before him).
Shakir
Nay: he has come with the truth and verified the messengers.
Dr. Ghali
No indeed, (but) he has come with the Truth and has sincere (faith) in the
Emissaries.
He saith: By Allah, thou verily didst all but cause my ruin,
Yusuf Ali
He said: "By Allah! thou wast little short of bringing me to perdition!
Shakir
He shall say: By Allah! you had almost caused me to perish;
Dr. Ghali
He says, "By Allah, (The Arabic is ta-llahi; which a stronger oath than the more
usual wa-llahi) decidedly you were almost about to topple me down indeed.
When he came to his Lord with a pure heart [attached to Allah Alone and none
else, worshipping none but Allah Alone true Islamic Monotheism, pure from the
filth of polytheism].
Pickthall
When he came unto his Lord with a whole heart;
Yusuf Ali
Behold! he approached his Lord with a sound heart.
And he said: "Verily, I am sick (with plague. He did this trick to remain in
their temple of idols to destroy them and not to accompany them to the pagan's
feast)."
Pickthall
Then said: Lo! I feel sick!
Yusuf Ali
And he said, "I am indeed sick (at heart)!"
Shakir
Then he said: Surely I am sick (of your worshipping these).
And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, "O my son, indeed I
have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He
said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills,
of the steadfast."
Muhsin Khan
And, when he (his son) was old enough to walk with him, he said: "O my son! I
have seen in a dream that I am slaughtering you (offer you in sacrifice to
Allah), so look what you think!" He said: "O my father! Do that which you are
commanded, Insha' Allah (if Allah will), you shall find me of As-Sabirin (the
patient ones, etc.)."
Pickthall
And when (his son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear
son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice thee. So look, what thinkest
thou? He said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing,
thou shalt find me of the steadfast.
Yusuf Ali
Then, when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him, he said: "O
my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: Now see what is thy
view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do as thou art commanded: thou will find
me, if Allah so wills one practising Patience and Constancy!"
Shakir
And when he attained to working with him, he said: O my son! surely I have seen
in a dream that I should sacrifice you; consider then what you see. He said: O
my father! do what you are commanded; if Allah please, you will find me of the
patient ones.
Dr. Ghali
Then when he (His son) reached the age of endeavoring with him, he said, "O my
son, surely I see in a dream (Literally: time of sleeping) that I should slay
you; so, look, what do you see?" He said, "O my (dear) father, perform whatever
you are commanded; you will soon find me, in case Allah (so) decides, among the
patient."
And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead,
Muhsin Khan
Then, when they had both submitted themselves (to the Will of Allah), and he had
laid him prostrate on his forehead (or on the side of his forehead for
slaughtering);
Pickthall
Then, when they had both surrendered (to Allah), and he had flung him down upon
his face,
Yusuf Ali
So when they had both submitted their wills (to Allah), and he had laid him
prostrate on his forehead (for sacrifice),
Shakir
So when they both submitted and he threw him down upon his forehead,
Dr. Ghali
So, as soon as they had both surrendered, and he dashed him upon his brow.
And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good
and the clearly unjust to himself.
Muhsin Khan
We blessed him and Ishaque (Isaac), and of their progeny are (some) that do
right, and some that plainly wrong themselves.
Pickthall
And We blessed him and Isaac. And of their seed are some who do good, and some
who plainly wrong themselves.
Yusuf Ali
We blessed him and Isaac: but of their progeny are (some) that do right, and
(some) that obviously do wrong, to their own souls.
Shakir
And We showered Our blessings on him and on Ishaq; and of their offspring are
the doers of good, and (also) those who are clearly unjust to their own souls.
Dr. Ghali
And We blessed him and Ishaq, and of their (The pronoun is dual; i.e., offspring
of the two of them) offspring some are fair-doers, and (some) are evidently
unjust to themselves.
